Gloucester High School Student Council Earns National Award

[Gloucester, VA] (April 29, 2024)—For its exemplary record of leadership, service and activities that improve the school and community, the Gloucester High School student council has been recognized as a 2024 National Council of Excellence by the National Association of Student Councils (NASC). The NASC program is supported by its parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

The Gloucester High School SCA lead the school in multiple spirit and motivational activities this school year including Homecoming, multiple pep rallies, and welcoming students to school on Mondays with a variety of Motivational Monday activities.  Additionally, the GHS SCA showed appreciation for the staff via thoughtful gifts of recognition and took part in a community service project collecting winter wear items for the homeless.  All of these activities have helped to develop the students into exceptional leaders and fostered a positive school climate.

“Receiving a National Council of Excellence Award reflects the amazing dedication of the students and school to make their community a better place,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “Gloucester High School has gone above and beyond in elevating student voice to ensure they are establishing a positive climate and culture, as well as fostering academic and social growth for all.”

“It’s so uplifting to see that our hard work and dedication doesn’t go unnoticed,” said Bailey Wilson, GHS Overall SCA President.  Principal of GHS, Dr. Stefan Mygas stated that “I am so proud of our GHS SCA for earning this recognition.  Their hard work, enthusiasm, and school spirit make GHS a much better place for all students and staff.  Congratulations to Mrs. Sturtz and all SCA members for this well-deserved honor!”

A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National Council of Excellence Award. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process, the councils must have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community.
