Duke Update for September 17, 2023
Congratulations to the 2023 Homecoming Court winners and newly elected SCA officers.
Jostens will be at GHS taking Jr class ring orders and Senior class graduation orders during all three lunch blocks on Tuesday, September 19th, and Wednesday, September 20th in front of the auditorium. Ring packets and graduation packets were handed out to students on Friday, September 15th. Extra packets can be picked up in the GHS Main Office.
The FFA floriculture team traveled to Springfield, MA this weekend to compete against teams from 7 other states in the floriculture contest at the Eastern States Exposition. The team placed 2nd, Ailin Harpole placed 3rd, Eliza Felder placed 8th. Congratula ons!
Food Delivery Services: DoorDash, Uber Eats, GrubHub, and any other food delivery services are not permitted on campus during or after school.
Parents/Guardians this is a reminder to set up a School Cash Online account for your student(s). School Cash Online is the payment site to purchase any and all of your student's fees, field trips, activities, and more. Please set up an account for your student today! A link can be found on the GHS website as well as the GCPS website.
Homecoming dance tickets are on sale for all students. Tickets are $15 and can only be purchased via School Cash Online. Sales will continue through September 28th or until sold out. All ticket sales are final.
Student illness: Please see the previous News Feed post which is a note from our school nurses about policies and procedures for when students are sick.
Yearbooks are now for sale online at yearbookordercenter.com using code 4758 for $55. There will be a price increase after October 1st. The book sold out the past 2 years so order before it’s too late!
Parent Drop-off: Traffic will flow in the opposite direction from last school year. Parents who are dropping students off in the morning or picking them up in the afternoon will use the second entrance if coming from Route 17, or the third entrance if coming from T.C. Walker Rd. Students may enter in the morning and exit at dismissal through the C-Hall doors near the Art and Culinary classes or may report directly to their first block class if it is in one of the portables.
Parking Passes: Student Parking passes for the 2023-2024 school year are on sale for $52. Parking passes can be purchased using the School Cash online. Parking pass applications are available on the GHS website and Main Office and must be completely filled out. Students will be able to choose a numbered parking space on a first-come, first-served basis un l all parking spots are sold for the 2023-2024 school year.
Bus Notes: Bus notes should be turned in to the Main Office at the beginning of the school day.
Activity Bus: The activity bus is now running, north and southbound and departs GHS at 5:45 pm Monday thru Thursday. Go to the GHS website or the Main Office for the drop-off locations.
My School Bucks: Parents/Guardians if you would like to add money to your student's lunch account, you can find the link for My School Bucks on the GCPS website under Food Services.
Seniors
There will be a Senior Portrait Makeup Day on October 17th for any senior who did not take their picture during the summer sessions or would like a retake. Tux/Drape will be available. Please bring a tank top for the drape pictures or a plain T-shirt for the tux picture.
Counseling:
Attention Parents of Dual Enrollment Students: The final deadline to pay for Dual Enrollment has been extended to Friday, September 22, by 3:00 p.m. All payments are accepted online using School Cash. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Coles, the RCC High School Navigator.
Attention Senior Families: School counselors have started meeting with seniors to review graduation requirements and post-secondary plans. If you would like to attend your senior’s mee ng please email their school counselor and set up an appointment. School counselor emails are on the GHS website and in students’ canvas accounts.
Counseling groups will start up on Sept. 20th. If you are interested in participating in either an Anger, Mindfulness, or Resiliency group, contact your school counselor or Ms. Morris to sign up. You can find a description of each group under the counseling HUB in Canvas.
Attention Juniors and Seniors: Admissions representatives from several colleges and universities will be conducting informational sessions here at the high school for interested GHS Juniors and Seniors this fall. These visits begin the week of September 25th with Richard Bland College on September 25th and the University of Virginia on September 26th. To participate, please sign up through your Naviance account. E-hall passes will be sent to those who sign up. Please see the Counseling Office if you have any questions.
Athletics:
The GHS varsity boys volleyball team stayed undefeated last week, with straight-sets wins over Phoebus and Heritage.
The GHS varsity girls' volleyball team defeated Phoebus in straight sets last Tuesday to earn their third victory of the season.
The GHS varsity field hockey team stayed undefeated last week, with wins over Nansemond River (4-1) and Norfolk Collegiate (10-0).
The GHS varsity football team defeated Denbigh last Friday by a score of 33-13 for their second win of the season.
A girls' basketball interest meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 20th at 3:15 PM in the Duke Rock Café. Anyone interested in playing girls' basketball this coming season should attend.
Baseball players: Conditioning for baseball will start on Monday, Sept 25th until 4:30 pm. A VHSL physical is needed in order to participate. We will meet at the baseball field. For any questions see Coach Morande, Coach Kibler, or Coach Hooker.
The GHS Homecoming football game is Friday, September 29, at 7:00 PM. Come out to support the Dukes as they take on Menchville High School! Please keep the following in mind regarding all home football games:
All elementary and middle school students must be accompanied by an adult to enter the game.
All bags will be checked upon entering the stadium. Students may not bring backpacks to the
Metal detectors will be in use at the entrance to the stadium.
Ticket Prices: Peninsula District athletic event ticket prices are increasing this year for the sporting events that charge. Students and Adults are $7 each, children 6-12, and senior citizens are $5 each. This is for all home and away events. The athletic department will have season passes available for each season at a discounted rate.
