Duke Update September 24, 2023
Thursday, September 28th is an early dismissal day for students. Students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m.
Students may not stay after school on Thursday unless they are with a teacher or coach.
This week is Homecoming Spirit Week and the themes are:
Monday: Color Explosion
Tuesday: Two Steppin' Tuesday
Wednesday: Generation Day
Thursday: Greek or Frat Out
Friday: Just Duke It
The Homecoming Parade will take place on Thursday, September 28th at 5:15 pm on Main Street. Come out and support your Dukes!

The Homecoming Dance is Saturday, September 30 from 7:00 PM-10:00 PM at GHS. Students must have purchased a ticket to attend and should bring a photo ID or copy of their receipt with them.
The Key Club will have an interest meeting for students and parents on Tuesday, Sep. 26 at 6:30 PM in the Duke Rock Cafe. Food and drinks will be provided.
Food Delivery Services: DoorDash, Uber Eats, GrubHub, and any other food delivery services are not permitted on campus during or after school.
Parents/Guardians this is a reminder to set up a School Cash Online account for your student(s). School Cash Online is the payment site to purchase any and all of your student's fees, field trips, activities, and more. Please set up an account for your student today! A link can be found on the GHS website as well as the GCPS website.
Student illness: Please see the note from our school nurses about policies and procedures for when students are sick.
Yearbooks are now for sale online at yearbookordercenter.com using code 4758 for $55. There will be a price increase after October 1st. The book sold out the past 2 years so order before it’s too late!
Parent Drop-off: Traffic will flow in the opposite direction from last school year. Parents who are
dropping students off in the morning or picking them up in the afternoon will use the second entrance if coming from Route 17, or the third entrance if coming from T.C. Walker Rd. Students may enter in the morning and exit at dismissal through the C-Hall doors near the Art and Culinary classes or may report directly to their first block class if it is in one of the portables.
Parking Passes: Student Parking passes for the 2023-2024 school year are on sale for $52. Parking passes can be purchased using the School Cash online. Parking pass applications are available on the GHS website and Main Office and must be completely filled out. Students will be able to choose a numbered parking space on a first-come, first-served basis until all parking spots are sold for the 2023-2024 school year.
Bus Notes: Bus notes should be turned in to the Main Office at the beginning of the school day.
Activity Bus: The activity bus is now running, north and southbound and departs GHS at 5:45 pm Monday thru Thursday. Go to the GHS website or the Main Office for the drop-off locations.
My School Bucks: Parents/Guardians if you would like to add money to your students' lunch account, you can find the link for My School Bucks on the GCPS website under Food Services.
Counseling:
Students: If you are interested in learning more about the military or speaking to a recruiter, there are 2 important dates coming up. On Monday, September 25th during lunches, an Army recruiter will be set up in the commons area. Also on Tuesday, September 26th, a National Guard recruiter will be set up during lunches in the commons area. If you have any questions, please see Ms. Hammack in school counseling.
Attention Senior Families: School counselors have started meeting with seniors to review graduation requirements and post-secondary plans. If you would like to attend your senior’s meeting please email their school counselor and set up an appointment. School counselor emails are on the GHS website and in students’ canvas accounts.
Attention Juniors and Seniors: Admissions representatives from several colleges and universities will be conducting information sessions here at the high school for interested GHS Juniors and Seniors this fall. These visits begin the week of September 25th with Richard Bland College on September 25th and the University of Virginia on September 26th. To participate, please sign up through your Naviance account. E-hall passes will be sent to those who sign up. Please see the Counseling Office if you have any questions.

Athletics:
Congratulations to the girls' varsity volleyball team on their 3-1 win over Kecoughtan on Thursday!
The boys varsity volleyball team stayed undefeated last week, with wins over Woodside and
Kecoughtan. Way to go!
The varsity field hockey team defeated Warwick 13-0 on Tuesday to stay undefeated. Congratulations!
The swim team for Gloucester High School will be holding an interest meeting for 8th-12th graders on Monday, October 2, 2023, at 3:15 in the Duke Rock at Gloucester High School.
*Reminder, all athletes need to have a School physical form completed to practice or compete.
Track Conditioning Training Schedule: Starting Tuesday, October 3rd, we will be holding our conditioning sessions every Tuesday and Thursday at the GHS weight room from 3:15 pm -to 4:45 pm. Please have appropriate training clothing and shoes. In order to participate in any team activities, all student-athletes must be in the 8th -12th grade and meet minimum Vhsl 2.0 GPA requirements. Also, a current physical is mandatory for participation in any of our activities.
Baseball players': Conditioning for baseball will start on Monday, Sept 25th until 4:30 pm. A VHSL physical is needed in order to participate. We will meet at the baseball field. Any questions see Coach Morande, Coach Kibler, or Coach Hooker.
The GHS Homecoming football game is Friday, September 29, at 7:00 PM. Come out to support the Dukes as they take on Menchville High School! Please keep the following in mind regarding all home football games:
- All elementary and middle school students must be accompanied by an adult to enter the game.
- All bags will be checked upon entering the stadium. Students may not bring backpacks to the
games.
- Metal detectors will be in use at the entrance to the stadium.
Ticket Prices: Peninsula District athletic event ticket prices are increasing this year for the sporting events that charge. Students and Adults are $7 each, children 6-12, and senior citizens are $5 each. This is for all home and away events. The athletic department will have season passes available for each season at a discounted rate.
