Duke Update November 5, 2023

Monday, November 6th is the last day of the first quarter and an early release day for students. Students will be released at 12:30 p.m. Bagged lunches will be provided for all students at regular prices. There will be no snack line.

Tuesday, November 7th is a professional day for staff; there is no school for students.

Wednesday, November 8th is the first day of the 2nd quarter.

Congratulations to the GHS One Act Play team, who gave an outstanding performance of their play, Jack in the Box, at the Regional Theater Competition on Saturday, November 4, at Warhill High School. The team placed third in the Regional and advanced to the Super Regional competition, which will be held on Saturday, November 11 at Chancellor High School in Fredericksburg.

Senior Make-up and Retake pictures will be on Monday, November 13th in the back of the Auditorium starting at 7:45 a.m. Lifetouch will only be completing tux and drape make-ups and retakes on that day. Please bring a tank top for the drape pictures or a plain t-shirt for the tux picture. This will be the final day for Senior pictures to be completed.

Monday, November 6th is the deadline to turn in artwork to C158C by 10th and 11th graders wishing to be considered for Visual Arts Summer Governor's School.

Parents/guardians: Students received the Impact Aid Survey Form (formerly known as Federal Card) on Tuesday. All students must return this form completed and signed by a parent or guardian. Extra copies can be picked up in the GHS Main Office.

Lost and Found: students this is a reminder to check daily for any lost items. Please see the Main Office for the location.

Parents/Guardians this is a reminder that GHS is not an open campus. Students are not permitted to leave campus to get lunch. If students are caught leaving campus without permission disciplinary action will occur.

GHS is collecting new toys for Toys 4 Tots from now until December 8th. Please bring your donations to the GHS Main Office.

Food Delivery Services: DoorDash, Uber Eats, GrubHub, and any other food delivery services are not permitted on campus during or after school.

Parents/Guardians this is a reminder to set up a School Cash Online account for your student(s). School Cash Online is the payment site to purchase any and all of your students' fees, field trips, activities, and more. Please set up an account for your student today! A link can be found on the GHS website as well as the GCPS website.

Student illness: Please see the note from our school nurses about policies and procedures for when students are sick.

Yearbooks are now for sale online at yearbookordercenter.com using code 4758. The book sold out the past 2 years so order before it’s too late!

Parent Drop-off: Traffic will flow in the opposite direction from last school year. Parents who are dropping students off in the morning or picking them up in the afternoon will use the second entrance if coming from Route 17, or the third entrance if coming from T.C. Walker Rd. Students may enter in the morning and exit at dismissal through the C-Hall doors near the Art and Culinary classes or may report directly to their first block class if it is in one of the portables.

Bus Notes: Bus notes should be turned in to the Main Office at the beginning of the school day.

Activity Bus: The activity bus is now running, north and southbound and departs GHS at 5:45 pm Monday thru Thursday. Go to the GHS website or the Main Office for the drop-off locations.

My School Bucks: Parents/Guardians if you would like to add money to your student's lunch account, you can find the link for My School Bucks on the GCPS website under Food Services.

Counseling:
Attention Juniors and Seniors: An admissions representative from Bridgewater College will be conducting an information session here at the high school for interested GHS Juniors and Seniors on Wednesday, November 15th. To participate, please sign up through your Naviance account. E-hall passes will be sent to those who sign up. Please see the Counseling Office if you have any questions.

Attention Senior Families: School counselors have started meeting with seniors to review graduation requirements and post-secondary plans. If you would like to attend your senior’s meeting please email their school counselor and set up an appointment. School counselor emails are on the GHS website and in students’ Canvas accounts.

Athletics:
Congratulations to varsity field hockey for winning the Region 4A championship! The team will play a state tournament game on Tuesday, November 7 at 7:00 PM at GHS.

Congratulations to boys volleyball on their win in the Regional semifinals and advancement to the Region Championship game on Monday at Jamestown. The team will play a state tournament game at GHS on Saturday, November 11.

Congratulations to Boys Cross Country on finishing 2nd in the Region Meet and advancing to states. Rylan Allcorn was the Region 4A individual champion.

Congratulations to Mya Baker, Kayla Turner, and Rachel Blittle on their advancement to the girls' cross country state meet. The boys and girls state cross country meet will be held on Saturday, November 11 at Oatlands in Leesburg.

Congratulations to the JV Girls Volleyball team on a successful season, finishing with a 7-3 record and finishing 3rd in the District. Great work!

Congratulations to the JV Field Hockey team on finishing the season 1st in the District with a 14-0-2 record, it is their 3rd straight undefeated season!

Girls' basketball tryouts are next Monday, November 6th from 5-7, Tuesday, November 7th from 5-7, and Wednesday, November 8th from 3-5. You must have a current physical to try out.

Regional and state competitions: Please check the GHS website for the schedule of regional and state competitions for Fall sports and One-Act Play.

There will be a GHS Lady Dukes Soccer interest meeting on November 13th in the Dukes Café at 3:15. Please plan on attending if you are interested in trying out for the Ladies' Soccer teams this coming season.

Winter sports tryouts start Monday, November 6th. A full list of dates, times, and locations is located on the GHS website. Coach's emails are also listed on the GHS Website under athletics.

As we enter the Region & State Tournaments parents & students, this is another important reminder that sportsmanship is a top priority of GCPS & the Virginia High School League. When attending any games either home or away we ask that you always show proper respect and sportsmanship for officials, players and fans, both on and off the field. Any inappropriate actions in the stands cannot be tolerated. Such actions will lead to removal from games, and being banned from attending any future events. Our teams have had a very successful season, please help us to continue to celebrate them by showing extraordinary sportsmanship at all times.

Region Ticket prices are Adults $10, Children $5 (GCPS Faculty Badges or GHS Season Passes are not valid for these events.)

Ticket Prices: Peninsula District athletic event ticket prices are increasing this year for the sporting events that charge. Students and Adults are $7 each, children 6-12, and senior citizens are $5 each. This is for all home and away events. The athletic department will have season passes available for each season at a discounted rate.

Seniors:
Attention Seniors and Families. The Sponsor a Senior Fundraiser will take place for the duration of October. Please see the Class of '24 Canvas page for more information or contact Mrs. Williams or Mrs. Zanette.
