Duke Update for May 12, 2024
We would like to wish a Happy Mother's Day to all mothers.

Congratulations to all of the cast, crew, and musicians, who performed in the Spring Musical The Little Mermaid. It was an amazing performance by all!

Spirit Week: This week we will be celebrating our seniors with a final Spirit Week and Pep Rally on Friday, May 17th. The themes will be:
Monday, May 13th - Anything but a backpack - please make sure items are safe for school and can fit through doors and hallways
Tuesday, May 14th - Beach Day
Wednesday, May 15th - Frat Day
Thursday, May 16th - Soccer Mom or BBQ Dad
Friday, May 17th - Future Friday - Seniors wear college/career, and other classes wear their class colors for next year.

The 5th Annual Pie in the Face Scholarship Fundraiser is taking place until Wednesday, May 15th. Bring in money to "vote" for the staffulty member that you want to see get pied at the pep rally on Friday. If we raise $2000, the Superintendent, Dr. Vladu will also get pied!

Semester 2 Attendance Recovery Sessions will start next week. There will be 3 Attendance Recovery Sessions on the following dates:

â—Ź Wednesday, May 22nd

The sign up form for Attendance Recovery is located on the school website and is on a first come first serve basis. The form went live on Monday, May 6th to sign up for all three sessions. Also, Attendance Waiver forms can be located on the GHS website, your Canvas page, or can be picked up from the Attendance Window near the Main Office. All session dates are almost completely filled.

Color Guard: Any current 8th through 11th grader interested in joining the 2024-25 Color Guard with the Marching Dukes should attend the upcoming tryout. Conditioning will take place on Monday, May 13th and Tuesday, May 14th after school until 6PM in the Main Gym. Auditions will be on Wednesday, May 15th after school until 5:30PM also in the Main Gym. This is a great opportunity to get involved in a competitive sport of the arts and make lasting friendships. No experience required, but please make sure a sports physical is completed. Please wear athletic clothing and bring a water bottle. You can contact Coach Deb Falkenberg or our Band Director, Mr. Venable with questions.

Ms. Croft is looking for two new athletic training student aides for the upcoming football season. This was previously known as being a football manager. This is a great opportunity for students interested in sports medicine or athletic training. Interested students should fill out the application on Canvas.

Beginning Monday, April 22nd, at the Gloucester Point Library Branch, artwork will be on display from the 3D Crafts and Advanced Studio Art Students.

Dress Code: Parents and guardians, we appreciate your support in following the GCPS dress code, which is found on page 6 of the Student Code of Conduct. Please note that hats and hoods should not be worn indoors, and tops must cover the midriff and navel.

Gloucester High School is pleased to announce that students can take the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles learner’s permit test online at the school on the following dates: May 22nd & June 5th in the Gloucester High School Media Center. Students 15 years and 6 months or older are eligible to test. Please see Canvas, Mr. Morgan or Ms. Hypes for more details.

Lost & Found: Students this is a reminder to check the lost and found daily if you have misplaced any items.

Bus Notes: Students this is a reminder to turn your bus notes into the Main Office at the beginning of the school day.

Parking: Parents, please do not park in the DSS parking lot across from GHS when you come to pick up your children from school.

Student illness: Please see this note from our school nurses about policies and procedures for when students are sick.

Seniors:
Seniors may now request 5 extra tickets for graduation through the GHS Main Office. Only one request per student. All graduating seniors will receive 10 tickets at the mandatory graduation rehearsal on Friday, June 7th at 8:30 am. The deadline to request extra tickets is 12:30 pm on Thursday, June 6th.

If you purchased graduation items from Jostens and were not able to pick up your items on Wednesday, April 24th, please come to the Main Office during your lunch or at the end of the day to pick up your items. Those seniors still needing to purchase a cap/gown unit or any other senior items from Jostens must order them before the deadline of Wednesday, May 15th.

Graduating Senior Hiring Event May 14th 8:00- 10:30 am in the Duke Rock. Local businesses will be present hiring our graduating Seniors for full-time positions. There is the possibility of on-the-spot interviews and job offers!! There will be a Mock Interview session the week prior to prepare. May 7th 8:00-10:30 am in the Duke Rock. See Mr. Schoeck in Room C146 for registration and more details.

Counseling:
Summer School: GHS will offer virtual courses for initial credit and credit recovery this summer. The cost for all courses is $100 each. Contact your school counselor for details.

Intervention and Treatment Specialist: We are very excited to announce that we are offering a new service to students at GHS! In partnership with the Middle Peninsula Northern Neck CSB, a Substance Abuse Intervention and Prevention Specialist will be on-site at GHS. The goal of the position is to offer substance use intervention/prevention and counseling services to lower the rate of substance use and abuse in Gloucester County Schools by offering intervention and prevention services to students.

Athletics:
Attention Parents/Guardians: when attending athletic events please park in the designated parking areas. No public parking for Softball, Baseball, or Tennis matches in the area along the tennis courts, or by the GHS auto shop area. This area has a lot of construction equipment and supplies.

Parents and Fans attending athletic events - Sportsmanship is always a top priority. Please show support and respect for the fans, opposing teams, and game officials at all times while attending home or away events. This includes never engaging negatively with fans or players from the opposite team. Any misconduct can lead to dismissal from the game, and from attending future games.

Ticket Prices: Peninsula District athletic event ticket prices have increased this year for the sporting events that charge. Students and Adults are $7 each, children 6-12, and senior citizens are $5 each. This is for all home and away events.
