Described as a “natural athlete” by one of his teammates, Wendall Johnston is one of the most dynamic and versatile athletes to have ever come out of Gloucester High School.

His talents were recognized early as he was chosen Most Valuable Athlete for his participation in junior varsity athletics. A participant and multi-letter winner in basketball and track it was his exploits in football at which everyone marveled. Team Co-Captain his senior year, Wendall displayed his versatility by playing and excelling at running back and quarterback on offense and cornerback on defense. He also handled the punting and kick-off duties. Recognized by his coaches as the school’s Most Valuable Athlete, he received the same honor by the student body in the Year Book.

Graduating in 1962, Wendall chose to enlist in the US Navy. Playing service football, he was a member of the 6th Fleet’s championship team while assigned to the carrier Shangri-La. He also fast pitched for the softball team, once striking out nineteen of twenty-one batters vs the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Wendall returned to Gloucester as a contractor and later taught Building Trades for twenty years at GHS. He additionally served as a volunteer assistant to Hall of Fame inductees Turnley Todd in football and John Pouchot and the cross country team. Still a member of the Gloucester Volunteer Fire Department, you will probably find him today on the golf course or with his wife Judy spending time with their seven grandchildren.
